It means every claim is backed by a specification: the thickness of the walls, the rating of the doors, the air-exchange rate of the filtration system. It means the shelter is a fully engineered, life-sustaining environment designed for true continuity of comfort, safety, and self-reliance — not a poured box with a hatch. And it means the engineering is documented, inspectable, and built by the same accountable team that builds the home above it.

Structure

Fourteen inches of engineered concrete

The shell is monolithic, steel-reinforced concrete — walls fourteen inches thick, poured around a dense rebar matrix and cured under controlled conditions. Built roughly fourteen feet below grade, the structure carries the static load of the earth above it with margin to spare, and the surrounding soil adds mass, radiation shielding, and year-round thermal stability.

Two doors, and a decontamination room between them

Entry is secured by dual 8-inch steel-reinforced concrete blast doors — and the space between them is the reason there are two. It's a fully outfitted decontamination room with a hard-plumbed shower: anyone coming in from outside washes down there before the inner door ever opens, so nothing contaminated reaches the living space. Each door seats against continuous gas-tight seals, and the protected envelope holds even while the outer door cycles.

A door this substantial only works if it moves effortlessly. Precision hinge geometry lets several thousand pounds swing at a fingertip's push, close softly, and seal completely. We wrote up the engineering in Blast Doors 101.

The shelter breathes through an advanced NBC filtration system — nuclear, biological, chemical. Outside air passes through military-grade filter banks that strip radioactive particulates, pathogens, and chemical agents before it enters the living space, while the system maintains positive pressure so nothing unfiltered can find its way in.

Day to day, it simply reads as exceptionally clean air. That's the standard throughout: life support engineered to disappear into comfort.

Why the home builder should build the bunker

Most shelters are manufactured elsewhere and dropped into a hole by one contractor while another builds the house. Ark Industries designs and constructs both as one continuous project — the shelter's structure, waterproofing, mechanical systems, and finish-out are coordinated with the home's foundation, HVAC, and electrical from the first drawing.

The result: no seams between two contractors' work, no compromises where systems meet, and a single accountable team standing behind the entire property — above grade and below it. What is a certifiable bomb shelter?

An underground shelter engineered to documented standards for structure, blast resistance, gas-tight sealing, and life support — not simply a reinforced room. Our system pairs 14-inch steel-reinforced concrete walls with dual 8-inch gas-tight blast doors and NBC air filtration, roughly 14 feet below grade. The full breakdown is in our buyer's guide.

Why are there two blast doors?

The dual 8-inch doors form an airlock, and the space between them is a fully outfitted decontamination room with a hard-plumbed shower. Anyone entering from outside washes down there before the inner door opens — so the living space is never exposed, and the gas-tight envelope holds even while the outer door cycles. How deep is the bunker built?

Roughly fourteen feet underground, beneath or beside the home's foundation. The earth above adds protection, sound isolation, and remarkably stable temperatures year-round.

What is NBC air filtration?

Nuclear, biological, and chemical. The system draws outside air through military-grade filter banks that remove radioactive particulates, biological agents, and chemical agents, while holding positive pressure inside the shelter so unfiltered air cannot leak in.

Does the shelter feel like a basement?

No — and that's deliberate. Finished walls, real flooring, proper lighting, furnished rooms. It's built as a subterranean extension of the home, held to the same finish standard as the spaces upstairs. More on that in Life Inside a Modern Bunker.

Can you add a bunker to an existing home?

Yes. The system is designed into new construction at The Estates at Lone Oak, but we also build integrated shelters for established estates. Feasibility depends on soil, access, and site conditions — the evaluation is the first step of our process.

Is the bunker visible from inside or outside the home?

No. Discretion is a design requirement. The entry reads as an ordinary part of the house, and construction is sequenced so the finished property shows no trace of what sits below it.

How long can a family stay underground?

The system is engineered for extended, comfortable occupancy — filtered air, independent power, water storage, and full living spaces. Duration depends on the configuration each owner selects; provisioning is planned together during design.
